The events take place in an American province, in a small town. The main character is the writer Alan Wake. He searches for his missing wife and encounters a dark entity that has taken over the town and its surroundings.

Alan is forced to make his way through the forest, wander abandoned farms, mines and other buildings. Fighting monsters takes place mainly at night. During daylight hours, the main character can explore the city by talking to its inhabitants.

The most important device in the game is the flashlight. Light weakens the defense of monsters, after which they can be killed with firearms. To combat them, you can also use light and noise grenades, stationary floodlights, car headlights, propane cylinders, etc.
